APSHO is calling on members to respond to proposed U.S. Department of Education changes that could remove nurse practitioner, physician associate, and clinical nurse specialist programs from the definition of “professional degree programs.” This shift could limit federal loan access and make advanced practice education less affordable—at a time when oncology urgently needs more clinicians.

These changes risk worsening workforce shortages and reducing patient access to timely, high-quality cancer care.

A public comment period is open until March 2, 2026. APSHO has prepared a customizable comment template for members, along with an FAQ document that provides background and answers common questions about the proposal.
