This course will focus on communication based concerns and barriers when interacting with the older cancer patient (including caregivers and family members), evaluation of decision making capacity, as well as how to work with an interpreter for patients who suffer both from dementia and experience a language barrier.

Overview

High-level discussion surrounding chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment, distress/anxiety and its affects on cognition, delirium, dementia, and depression. This course will focus on communication based concerns and barriers when interacting with the older cancer patient (including caregivers and family members), evaluation of decision making capacity, as well as how to work with an interpreter for patients who suffer both from dementia and experience a language barrier. Day 2 is a workshop comprised of a specific experiential learning methodology that will immerse participants in practicing newly taught skills in a simulated relevant clinical environment.

Objectives
By attending this program, learners will be able to:

 

  1. Provide an overview on dementia, delrium, depression: its detection and care
  2. Discuss the role of distress and anxiety on quality of life of older cancer patients
  3. Define decision-making capacity and explain its legal implications
  4. Appreciate decision-making challenges and learn to assess in older adults with cancer and cognitive syndromes
  5. Recognize ageism and appreciate how it interferes with the medical care of older adults with cancer
  6. Become familiar with the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in the evaluation of elderly cancer patients with cognitive decline
  7. Understand the principles of shared decision making
  8. Observe and practice skills for successful interactions with older adults with cancer and their caregivers

This training program is offered several times a year for healthcare professionals who work with, or are interested in working with, older adults with cancer.

Participants are selected through a competitive application process, and registration is complimentary for those accepted. If your application is approved, Brandi Boynton, MPH, Clinical Research Coordinator (boyntonb@mskcc.org), will follow up with additional details regarding the workshop.
