Carrie Tompkins Stricker, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, CRNP, executive director of Canopy Cancer Collective and an associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University College of Nursing, was presented with the fifth annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced
Practice by APSHO, the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO). The award recognizes an exceptional leader, mentor, and champion of advanced practice in oncology/hematology.

October 21, 2020 – Lawrenceville, NJ – The Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) presented the fifth annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology to Carrie Tompkins Stricker, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, CRNP, an associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University
College of Nursing. Created in honor of the late Mary Pazdur, RN, MSN, the award is presented to an advanced practitioner and member of APSHO who consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research,
and education in the oncology/hematology field.

Dr. Stricker is also the executive director of Canopy Cancer Collective, a learning health network of 14 NCI-designated cancer centers, dedicated to improving care and patient-defined quality survival for
pancreatic cancer. In addition to her other roles, she is the president and founder of Accelerate Outcomes, LLC, a consulting company that provides expertise in all areas of health care and health technology for health system and corporate clients who
want to improve their capacity and funding support to drive high quality outcomes.

Known for her oncology supportive care expertise as an oncology nurse practitioner, Dr. Stricker is respected for her leadership in using digital health and care delivery
innovation to transform cancer care. "Carrie Stricker embodies the focus of the Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology in so many ways," said APSHO Board of Directors President Sandra Kurtin, PhD, ANP-C, AOCN®, FAPO, from the
Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona. "Carrie’s unrelenting innovation, exemplary leadership, patient-outcome–focused research, interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and dedication to advancing the AP role exemplifies excellence."

Former colleagues describe a supportive and driven partner when talking about Dr. Stricker. After joining the CT Challenge Survivorship Network's Medical Advisory Board, where she advised on state-wide development of cancer survivorship programs and services,
"she enhanced both the visibility and impact of oncology nurses and advanced practitioners in our state…in both community-based and academic settings," said Andrew Salner, MD, FACR, of the Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.

A charter member of APSHO, Dr. Stricker is the founding director of Thomas Jefferson University College of Nursing's graduate program in Transformative Systems Leadership and an entrepreneur, health services researcher, and clinician. In 2013, she co-founded
Carevive Systems, Inc., whose EMR-integrated cancer care digital platform enables evidence-based cancer care management and patient engagement to improve clinical outcomes. As chief clinical officer, Dr. Stricker saw Carevive's oncology solutions widely
adopted and integrated for clinical and research use, and then expanded to include computerized algorithms for symptom management decision support.

Despite her many pursuits outside of the clinic, "Carrie has unerringly demonstrated her deep commitment
to patient care by retaining an active practice as an oncology nurse practitioner," said Deborah Mayer, PhD, RN, AOCN®, FAAN, of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In her recommendation letter, Dr. Mayer cited the
2010 memoir of U.S. Senator (PA) Arlen Specter, Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate, wherein he mentioned Dr. Stricker's "keen awareness of the psychological dimension of the cancer experience."

The award ceremony took place during JADPRO Live, an annual educational event during which the APSHO annual meeting takes place. The conference welcomes more than 1,000 attendees annually, including oncology/hematology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other advanced degree
nurses and health-care professionals. Past recipients of the award include Jody Pelusi, PhD, FNP, AOCNP®, of HonorHealth Research Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona; Jeannine Brant, PhD, APRN, AOCN®, FAAN, of City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in
Duarte, California; Christina Cone, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, AOCNP®, of Duke Cancer Institute, Durham, North Carolina; and Allyson Price, PA-C, Thought Leader Liaison for AbbVie.

Allyson Price, PA-C, Honored With The Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology by APSHO

Allyson Price, PA-C, formerly of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was presented with the fourth annual award by the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO). The award recognizes an exceptional leader, mentor, and champion of advanced practice in oncology/hematology.

October 11, 2020 – Lawrenceville, NJ – The Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) presented the fourth annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology to Allyson Price, PA-C, formerly of The
University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Created in honor of the late Mary Pazdur, RN, MSN, the award is presented to an advanced practitioner and member of APSHO who consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions
to clinical practice, research, and education in the oncology/hematology field.

Allyson Price, PA-C, is a physician assistant who worked in the Department of Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center for 7 years. Ms. Price managed acute and chronic leukemia patients in the outpatient and inpatient clinics and served as a preceptor for
    PA students and PA/NP fellows.

“Ally has a unique ability to understand patient needs and visualize how we can improve their experiences,” said Madeleine Henriques, MPAS, PA-C, of MD Anderson Cancer Center. Along with a group of advanced practitioners, Ms. Price created the Leukemia

for her patients stood out in many minds, inspiring everyone who worked with her.

Gautam Borthakur, MD, of MD Anderson Cancer Center, talked about her commitment to training and mentoring new advanced practitioners as a supervisor. “She plans their rotations to maximize their experience, spends a lot of time with them, and in return
asks for the same level of commitment from her trainees.”

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Kelly Rice Lisenbee, DNP, ANP-C, AOCN®, late February from diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Dr. Lisenbee was a member of the APSHO Board from 2019 to 2020. Our deepest sympathies go to her husband and two
daughters, two stepsons and stepdaughter.

Kelly Lisenbee, DNP, ANP-C, AOCN®, was an advanced practitioner at Duke University Health System in Durham, North Carolina. She has worked for Duke for around 21 years and has held several positions,
including leadership positions. She had more than 26 years of experience in adult oncology with a primary focus in lung cancer. Dr. Lisenbee was a 2018 Duke Johnson and Johnson Fellow, the recipient of the 2004 UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing
Alumna of the Year award, the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina award in 2004, and the O’Keefe Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing given by the Duke Friends of Nursing. In addition to APSHO, she was a member of ASCO, AANP, and Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society. Dr. Lisenbee was also adjunct faculty at the Duke School of Nursing. Some of her passions included survivorship and the emerging field of onco-primary care.

Many of you knew Dr. Kelly Lisenbee as a colleague, mentor,
teacher, or friend. Kelly was a caring, loving person with a beautiful smile. She touched many lives, not only her patients, but students, colleagues, and our APSHO Board. She is known to have said these words to her daughters and this is for us to ponder
– “Fight today to THRIVE Tomorrow.”

APSHO Welcomes Renowned Cancer Center’s Oncology/Hematology APs as First-Ever Institutional Members

Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists from New York-based cancer center join APSHO, a national network of health-care professionals devoted to a collaborative approach to cancer care.

The Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) welcomes more than 900 advanced practitioners—nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists—from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) as its first institutional members.

APSHO, now 2,400 members strong, is the only society dedicated to an interdisciplinary team approach to cancer treatment. The society’s mission is to improve the quality of care for patients with cancer by supporting critical issues in educational, clinical, and professional development for advanced practitioners in hematology and oncology.

As the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center, MSK has devoted more than 135 years to exceptional patient care, influential educational programs and innovative research to discover more effective strategies to prevent, control and, ultimately, cure cancer. MSK is home to more than 20,000 physicians, scientists, nurses and staff united by a relentless dedication to conquering cancer. Today, it is one of 51 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, with state-of-the-art science and technology supporting groundbreaking clinical studies, personalized treatment, and compassionate care for patients. MSK also trains the next generation of clinical and scientific leaders in oncology through continually evolving educational programs, here and around the world. Year after year, MSK is ranked among the top two cancer hospitals in the country, consistently recognized for their expertise in adult and pediatric oncology specialties.

“Institutional membership demonstrates the highest commitment to both patients and the advanced practitioners who care for them,” commented Wendy Vogel, MSN, FNP, AOCNP®, APSHO’s Executive Director. “The interdisciplinary team approach to cancer care is the best hope for improved patient outcomes. We are delighted that MSK is working with APSHO to provide critical clinical information and professional education to their advanced practitioners.”

“I am constantly exploring ways to ensure that our advanced practice providers have access to relevant, quality educational materials to promote their continual clinical and professional growth,” said Aaron M. Begue, MS, RN, CNP, Executive Director of Advanced Practice Providers at MSK. “We were fortunate to connect with APSHO to provide access for our clinicians. We also appreciate the inclusiveness of APSHO in welcoming nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists. These three professions work together every day to care for patients, and it makes perfect sense that they should all have access to the same relevant and high-quality educational resources.”

Institutional membership with APSHO provides institutions significant discounts on membership and clinical education, a cost savings that is essential at a time when educational budgets are shrinking and the science of oncology is expanding. The society offers advanced practitioners a rich network of oncology professionals to collaborate with. APSHO’s mentoring program gives professionals the opportunity to share expertise and best practices with colleagues across the country. The official journal of APSHO, the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology, is a peer-reviewed, indexed publication that provides information on clinically relevant, evidence-based practice.
